Borges Cultural Centre, Buenos Aires, Argentina 2000 Exposition 1998 - 1999 Work VITAL IMPULSES Alejandra Mettler takes a shade of each of her life lessons and through her creative process she transforms all that in a subtle line, a texture, or an intense light. The vital circle has been constant in the work of this young artist. If life and death cohabited in the continuous and undifferentiated space of her paintings in the earliest '90, later they amalgamated in the butterflies birth of her artistic installation "Morir y Vivir" (Die and live) in 1993. Today they seem to crystalize in an origin ritual barely suggested and based on simple forms. Although just a few spheres, some lines and a couple of curves are enough for her to express her emotions, the path set by this acts manifests a desire for experimentation that take Mettler to discover the richness of this remote materials. With resin, polythene, tapes, strings or wools, she creates a diversity of evocative imaginary. Stripped of their usual functions, these elements allow her to play with the abstraction of forms. However, once integrated to the universe of her artistic work, these materials enable a dialog that drags again their common dimension found in the everyday reality. In this way Alejandra Mettler overlaps different levels of reflection and confronts us to a plastic proposal that avoid certainty as unique interpretation. Undoubtedly, her formation in art and design fields is present in this work, but nevertheless, a renewed impulse is irradiated by the experimentation, which is also, a vital impulse. Cristina Rossi
