Nature as Utopia To talk about the world, Alejandra Mettler builds her text (textus= knit or weave) unravelling the established order. That is how she unveils what it is sometimes hidden to the common eyes, even when that thing is the so called "spirit of time": the substitution of natural by artificial, of spontaneous by programmed. In some of her works, the artist use threads, wools or ribbons made with natural materials, as cotton, but then she suffocates this by unlocking them in aseptic resin plates. Nothing could suggest the action (natural) of the hand that knit, care and embrace. The inner necessity of protection gives his place to an external schedule. There, natural becomes abstract and impersonal, just as when the little wooden spheres are stocked in resin rectangles. Being perceptive to the game of contrasts, Mettler confronts her cold ordeals to the warmth of the organic matter and to the always seductive effects of the whole. That is why our sight will never stop to be pleased with the fine textures, the chromatic harmony, the aqueous line movements, and the ever changing reflections and transparency. With the same cold seduction imposed by the new communication media, Mettler talks direct and indirectly about genetic manipulation, cloning, selected sperm cuts in the vital life chain, about human contact mediatisation. In general terms, it talks about denounce the decadence of reason, when we think it have reach the peak of evolvement and power. A reason that far from being illuminating and capable of conduct a better world, as though in the Age of Enlightenment, it makes us more and more distant from the ideal of human happiness, when it makes bigger our distance with Nature. That is why today, that nature, relentless, challenges and punishes us with the “utopia” of its own recovery. Elena Oliveras Member of the Argentinian and International Association of Arts Critics
